Gifting, or Not Many People Want Your On...

As I was prepping for my first year on the playa, I had friends ask what I was going to gift or what my contribution was to this temporary experiment in the desert. Despite being fortunate enough to have several friends to lean on for info, support, and guidance, I had no idea what to do. Gifting is a vague term in the Burner-verse. “Gifting: Burning Man is devoted to acts of gift giving. The value of a gift is unconditional. Gifting does not contemplate a return or an exchange for something of equal value.” The definition is purposefully unclear. For a keener...

To The Beach!

OK.  Let’s be honest here. Otherworld has the best damn beachfront of any Regional Event in the Burnerverse! With 1.2 km of soft sun warmed sand, and occasionally visited by  whales, eagles, osprey, bears, cougars, wolves, and beautiful people, it really upstages the event a bit. Sand, surf, wildlife, sun.  This is not the playa where we suffer.     If the weather is with us, (and it will be) in a week’s time we’ll all be lazing in the sun, watching the osprey fish in the surf, chasing gigantic bubbles, playing inside gigantic bubbles, dancing...

And Oldtimer Tells It Like It Is –...

Years ago I was asked to write a letter to Otherworld newcomers. Since I have been going to Otherworld before it was Otherworld and I run the Black Rock City Retirement Community (see Otherworld 2012/2013, Burn in the Forest 2010, Critical Northwest 2010/2012, Burning Man 2013 and 2016), I qualify for the burner senior citizen’s rate. I also qualify for that jaded old timer who is going to give you unsolicited advice about how to do it right. Here’s the letter, kids. Do me proud. After years of your friend bugging you to come to this awesome thing, you decided...

Practice Caring … LNT

Garbage. Or, as burners call it, MOOP. Matter Out Of Place. It’s everywhere. It’s on the street, in the ocean… in your pocket? Leave No Trace. It’s one of the 10 Principles of Burning Man. “Our community respects the environment. We are committed to leaving no physical trace of our activities wherever we gather. We clean up after ourselves and endeavor, whenever possible, to leave such places in a better state than when we found them.” Isn’t that basic human decency? Not always. But for burners, it’s usually the case. We...

Getting Started

“GREETINGS FROM BURNING MAN!” When I first read about Burning Man, (in Bruce Sterling’s 1996 Wired article) finding your way to Burning Man seemed near impossible. “If you have to ask, you don’t belong there.” was the line famously given at the Gerlach gas station, and for a young tree-planting island punk, finding Burning Man took knowing someone or a lot more dedication to getting in over my head than I had at the time.   Fast forward a half dozen years, when we ran into burners on the ferry, on their way to Recompression, on the Sunshine Coast.  These were...
